It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of a loyal, long-time Camden Federation of Private Tenants (CFPT) member, Christina Raeuchle, following a prolonged illness. Christina served on our Management Committee for a number of years and her direct experience of the vagaries of life in the private rented sector made her a valuable asset. During that period, she had to deal with a landlord whose activities sometimes bordered on criminality so she was very much at the sharp end. She was deeply involved in the Fairer Fair Rents Campaign in the late 1990s (and the ongoing struggle to achieve legal rights for private tenants.
Christina was a fighter and this carried over into her private life and the way she battled with her illness for a difficult twelve years. Originally from Germany, she settled in London, having worked for a number of years in Iran (then Persia) for Lufthansa. She loved the country and came to know the Middle East well, travelling extensively when she regularly had to leave the country to renew her visa. Lebanon, Egypt, these were countries she was very familiar with. Unfortunately, she was in Iran when the revolution broke out and often related hair-raising stories about what it was like trying to survive under life-threatening conditions while waiting to be evacuated.
Those CFPT members who knew Christina will remember her as someone who was outspoken and who was willing to fight for what she believed was right. She is gone but her battle continues.
